Paul Cuffee School Awarded EPA Cleanup Grant

L-R: RIDEM Head Janet Coit, Mayor Taveras, Congressman Cicilline, Senator Whitehouse, Cuffee Head Michael Obel-Omia, Cuffee student, Senator Reed, EPA Region 1 Curt Spalding

I was thrilled to attend yesterday’s ceremony honoring the announcement of EPA funding for the Paul Cuffee School brownfield remediation project – which will transform a Providence brownfield into a new parking lot and playing field for the existing school. The proposed design, led by Klopfer Martin Design Group, will also include strategic stormwater management intervention to manage stormwater runoff from the site. In addition to significant reduction of impervious area, a bioretention system is proposed as a simple, straightforward BMP on this urban, constrained school site, and will offer a wonderful opportunity for students to study the system and even take part in the long-term operation and maintenance activities.
